The School of Music, Humanities and Media at the University of Huddersfield is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Digital Signal Processing Applied to Music. This provides an exciting opportunity to join IRiMaS (Interactive Research in Music as Sound), an innovative five-year research project funded by the European Research Council working at the frontiers of knowledge in the field. The Research Fellow will bring Digital Signal Processing skills to this interdisciplinary project which co-ordinates expertise in musicology, software design and DSP to facilitate a new approach to music analysis.
The IRiMaS project will operate at the frontier of developments in Digital Musicology and the successful candidate will work as part of a team undertaking research into innovative approaches to Music Analysis through the development of new interactive aural software. In an age when technology is revolutionizing the ways in which music is made and distributed, this project proposes correspondingly to transform approaches to musicology, moving from a primarily fixed, text-based approach to one that incorporates as an integral feature the interactive and aural. It will bring together interdisciplinary skills in the development of research strategies and software that enable musicological research to engage more directly with sound. It will pioneer a ground-breaking approach to music research in which dynamic interaction with sound is fundamental and music's temporal nature is central to research investigations and their dissemination, presenting a significant conceptual challenge to the traditional textual bias of much musical research and leading to new enhanced modes of musicological knowledge.
The role of this Research Fellow will be as the principal developer of DSP resources to underpin the software development within the project. As such the role will involve liaising and communicating with the other team members, both musicologists and programmers, developing new ideas in dialogue with them. The role will be overseen by the Principal Investigator, Professor Michael Clarke. It will also involve working closely with one of the Senior Staff on the project, Dr Axel Roebel, Head of Sound Analysis-Synthesis at IRCAM (Paris). This project builds on earlier research at Huddersfield into 'Interactive Aural Analysis' (https://www.hud.ac.uk/research/researchcentres/iaa/) and 'Technology and Creativity in Electroacoustic Music' (https://www.hud.ac.uk/research/researchcentres/tacem/). The Research Fellow in DSP will develop new algorithms and adapt existing resources to underpin the software development which is central to this ambitious project.
You will be part of a small and flexible team of programmers and musicologists, based in the dynamic research environment offered by the Centre for Research in New Music (CeReNeM) at Huddersfield and its Creative Coding Lab.
A PhD (or other Doctoral level qualification) at the time of the project start, or awarded within 12 months of the start, in a relevant subject (e.g. signal analysis and re-synthesis) is essential.
If you are currently registered as a full-time student at the University please note that you may only apply for part-time jobs of 15 hours or less per week.
