To celebrate International Women's Day during the University's Inclusion Week, we invite you to attend a panel discussion to hear the experiences and career journeys of some of our inspirational women leaders:


Professor Christine Jarvis, Director of Art, Design & Architecture

Christine Jarvis studied English and European Literature at the University of Warwick, trained to teach at the University of Leicester and did her PhD at the University of Leeds. She worked for eleven years in further, adult and community education before joining the University of Huddersfield. Her leadership roles have included Head of Department at Huddersfield, Head of Education and Humanities at Sheffield Hallam University, Dean of Education and Professional Development and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning at Huddersfield. Although Christine retired at the end of 2018, she has just returned on a temporary basis as Acting Director of Art, Design and Architecture. She has held a range of external positions and is currently chair of the Dewsbury Learning Trust.

Professor Adele Jones, Professor of Social Work and None in Three Research Centre Director

Adele is Professor of Social Work at the University of Huddersfield specialising in research with persons impacted by violence and abuse (especially women and children). Adele is also Director of the None in Three Research Centre at the University for the prevention of Gender-Based Violence. Adele has led research in 19 countries and is a published author of numerous studies on a range of issues including child abuse, HIV-AIDS, children in armed conflict, children of prisoners, asylum seekers/refugees and, gender-based violence.

She has previoulsy held various roles at the University of West Indies, St Augustine Campus (2001 – 2007) which included Lecturer in Social Work, Coordinator of Postgraduate SW Studies and Acting Head of Department. Adele was also Head of Department of Health and Social Care at the Royal Holloway College, the University of London 2005 – 2006.

Rebekah Smith, Chief Executive Officer (Student’s Union)

Rebekah became Chief Executive Officer for the University's Student's Union in 2017. She leads a team of 130+ staff supporting the Board with the strategic direction of the organisation ensuring they deliver the best possible support, advice, representation and activities to the 20,000 students at the University. Rebekah was previously Director of Development at Leeds University Union from 2011 to 2017. Previous roles include Marketing and Development Director for Eureka and Head of Marketing and Sales for Park Lane College.

Dr Georgina Blakeley, Director of Teaching, Learning and Student Experience

Georgina recently joined the University of Huddersfield from the Open University (OU), where she was the Director of Teaching and Deputy Head of School. She originally honed her skills as an innovator in teaching and learning at the University of Huddersfield prior to joining the Open University (OU), where she rose to the position of Head of Politics. During her time at the O, in 2017, she received the OU Award for Innovation in Teaching and in the same year was shortlisted in the Most Innovative Teacher of the Year category of the THE Awards. Georgina received her most recent accolade in September 2019, the CEU’s European Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is accompanied by the Diener Prize of €5,000.
