An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented graduate to join a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with University of Huddersfield and Paxman Coolers. The post-holder will have the opportunity to apply and develop their skills in a medical innovation environment as part of this high-impact, rewarding project.
For individuals in treatment for cancer, there is currently no effective prevention of Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). However, this project will develop a new medical device to be used during chemotherapy treatment that could have the potential to benefit 1.4 million patients globally and over 30,000 in the UK annually. The key aim of the KTP Associate role is to develop and embed within the company a human-centred design (HCD) approach to the development of new therapies and technologies.

Paxman has been pioneering scalp cooling technology (a clinically-proven cold cap system) worldwide for over 20 years. This innovative and patented technology has helped over 100,000 cancer patients in more than 50 countries worldwide to retain their hair during chemotherapy. They are a leading global manufacturer and supplier of the technology and drive forward research in order to continually improve the efficacy of the technology.
The Role
Over the course of the 2-year project, you will work in new product development with experts from the University of Huddersfield’s School of Arts and Humanities, and senior product managers of Paxman Coolers, to create a new innovative medical device using your product/industrial design experience and a wide range of HCD approaches. Part of this important role will require you to embed HCD strategies within the company as you take ownership of the design and development process of this new medical cooling system for the prevention of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy (CIPN) via the nationally acclaimed KTP scheme (www.ktp-uk.org). Your role will be key to enabling the company to be truly innovative in designing new products that reach and benefit patients across the globe.
The Person
Applicants should hold a degree (min. 2.1) BA/BSc Product Design or in a related discipline. A Master’s or PhD in relevant field is desirable. The successful candidate will have industry experience (minimum of a placement year or equivalent) and knowledge of medical product design development, design for manufacturing, experience using SolidWorks, materials and processes for medical products, tool design.
